Turmeric in HarmoBrain: What 95% Curcuminoids Means on the Label

HarmoBrain lists Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Rhizome Extract 95% Curcuminoids as the fifth of six materials in its 575 mg blend. The 95% figure means the extract is standardised so that curcuminoids, the compounds turmeric research focuses on, make up 95% of it. The label prints no separate amount for turmeric, and it lists no black pepper extract (piperine) beside it.

The short version

  • Fifth of six. Turmeric sits after L-carnitine and before CoQ10 in the 575 mg blend.
  • 95% curcuminoids. A standardisation figure, not a milligram amount.
  • No piperine. The label lists no absorption partner such as black pepper extract.
  • One safety line. Anyone with a liver condition should ask a doctor first.

Where turmeric sits on the Harmo Brain label

The Harmo Brain panel prints one amount for a single ingredient, magnesium at 80 mg, and one total for everything else: a proprietary blend of 575 mg. Turmeric is inside that blend. Its full label line reads Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Rhizome Extract 95% Curcuminoids.

The federal labelling rule, 21 CFR 101.36, lets a maker print a blend as one total as long as the names appear in order of weight. So the order tells you something. Turmeric is fifth of six: lighter than magnesium glycinate, alpha lipoic acid, butcher's broom and L-carnitine, and heavier than CoQ10.

The order also limits how much room is left. Pure magnesium glycinate is 14.1% magnesium by weight, so 80 mg of magnesium would take about 567 mg of the compound and leave about 8 mg for the other five names. The label does not say which grade of magnesium glycinate is used, and some grades carry more magnesium per milligram, so the exact split cannot be worked out. The 575 mg blend article walks through that arithmetic in full.

What 95% curcuminoids means

Turmeric is the ginger-family root that gives curry its colour. The rhizome is the underground stem, the part that is dried and ground. Curcuminoids are the yellow compounds inside it, and curcumin is the best known of them.

Plain turmeric powder holds only a small share of curcuminoids. An extract standardised to 95% has been concentrated so that nearly all of it is curcuminoids. That is why research on turmeric usually talks about curcumin rather than the spice itself.

The figure is a statement about the extract's strength, not about the dose. Ninety-five percent of an unprinted amount is still an unprinted amount. HarmoBrain gives turmeric a place in the blend and a standardisation, and this website does not guess the milligrams beyond that.

Does curcumin reach the body? What absorption research says

Many searches about turmeric ask whether curcumin reaches the brain. The research starts one step earlier. Curcumin taken by mouth is poorly absorbed, and a review by Dei Cas and Ghidoni describes how much of the work on curcumin is about getting it into the blood at all.

One common fix is piperine, from black pepper. In one study cited by Hewlings and Kalman, piperine raised curcumin absorption by 2000%. Piperine is not among the eleven ingredients on the Harmo Brain label. The panel names the standardised extract on its own.

That is a plain fact about the formula, not a verdict on it. The seller describes Harmo Brain as a mitochondrial and circulatory formula, and turmeric fits neither word. It sits in the blend as itself, one of six materials in a once-daily capsule.

The 18-month curcumin trial, and what it tested

The curcumin study most often linked to memory is Small and colleagues, 2018. It gave 90 mg of curcumin twice a day, in a bioavailable form, for 18 months, to 40 adults aged 51 to 84 without dementia.

The trial did not test this capsule, and its amount is a research amount. The two columns are kept apart on purpose, so a study figure is never read as what one capsule holds. The ingredients page sets every material out the same way.

Turmeric safety: the liver note

NCCIH describes conventional turmeric as likely safe for two to three months. Liver injury has been reported, mainly with high-bioavailability products. A US network collected ten such cases since 2011, and three of the seven products tested also contained piperine. The Harmo Brain label lists no piperine.

  • Anyone living with a liver condition should ask a doctor before the first capsule.
  • Anyone already taking another turmeric or curcumin product should count both.
  • The label rules the capsule out for anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing.
  • Anyone taking a medication should consult a physician first, as the label's caution asks.

The other medicines worth raising, such as warfarin, insulin, some antibiotics and osteoporosis medicines, are tied to their ingredients on the side effects and safety page.

Taking HarmoBrain with other turmeric products

Turmeric turns up in many cupboards: golden milk powders, joint blends, multi-ingredient capsules. Over-the-counter products count. A second product with turmeric in it adds to what this capsule holds, and the liver note above is about turmeric products in general, not one brand.

The simple habit is to read every label you take, line by line, and bring the bottles to your pharmacist. The Harmo Brain panel names all six materials, which makes that conversation short. If you take two turmeric products, ask whether you need both.

Turmeric questions

Does Harmo Brain contain black pepper extract?

No. Piperine is not among the eleven ingredients on the label. The blend names turmeric rhizome extract standardised to 95% curcuminoids on its own.

How much turmeric is in one HarmoBrain capsule?

The label does not print it. Turmeric sits fifth of six inside the 575 mg blend, which the labelling rule allows to be printed as one total with the names in order of weight.

Can I take HarmoBrain with a turmeric supplement?

Count both, and ask your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you have a liver condition. A second turmeric product adds to what this capsule holds.

A note on what this is.

Harmo Brain is a dietary supplement, not a medicine. Nothing in this post describes it as a remedy for any condition. A change in memory, energy or concentration that worries you is a reason to be assessed by a doctor, not a reason to start a capsule.
